Haemorrhage is a condition, related to rakta or blood that can be seen both as an emergency and also as a disease. Haemorrhage receives the name based on the areas it occurs, such as epistaxis(bleeding from the nose), haematuria(bleeding through urinary tract), haematemesis(vomiting out the blood)and menorrhagia etc. Haemorrhage is also an emergency condition caused due to the traumatic injuries, road traffic accidents etc. It is also known that the Modern Medicine has topped all the other medical sciences in the management of emergency and in turn as a life saving science
Same as the Modern medicine, Ayurvedic science also has eight specializations under which Shalya tantra or Ayurvedic Surgery is one of them. The great surgeon, whom even the Modern surgeons has considered as the Father of Surgery is none, but the Father of Ancient Surgery too. The great Susrutha who has specialized in Shalya tantra from Lord Dhanwantari (The God of Ayurveda) has a treatise named after him called Susrutha samhitha consisting of 120 chapters. Apart from the fundamentals of surgical skills, surgical techniques, herniotomy, appendicectomy etc surgeries, the reference of haemorrhage and its management through prathama chikitsa or the first is also available. Haemorrhage in Ayurveda, is termed as Raktasrava. Even here, raktasrava has been explained both as an emergency and a disease same as that of modern medicine which is found scattered throughout the samhitha. Though both the internal and external haemorrhage has been explained in samhitha, at present, only the external haemorrhage and its management is being described.
Management of Haemorrhage in Ayurveda :
Apart from these, there are other 4 methods to stop the bleeding such as :
Sandhana- the process of helping the inherent tendency of vessels to contract by applying astringent lotions which helps in the contraction of the blood vessels.
Skandana- is the process of thickening or coagulating the external haemorrhage by cold applications. eg; snow. This helps in the coagulation of the blood.
Pachana- the process of drying up the traumatic wound immediately, which later could lead to suppuration. This causes the inflammatory reactions.
Dahana- is the process of cauterization. This gets the blood vessels approximated.
